Bridge Deck Membrane

Torchtar’s APP Membrane - Bridge Deck is a high-performance waterproofing solution designed to protect bridge decks and critical infrastructure. Made from distilled bitumen modified with Atactic Polypropylene (APP) polymers, this membrane offers a unique combination of flexibility, strength, and UV resistance. Its mineral-coated surface ensures superior durability, weather resistance, and long-lasting performance. Ideal for high-traffic areas, it effectively shields against water infiltration and extreme weather conditions, making it the perfect choice for bridge decks, overpasses, and other exposed applications.

Storage Conditions: Rolls must be stored in their original packaging, in a vertical position, under cool and dry conditions. They must be protected from direct sunlight, rain, snow, ice, and other environmental factors to maintain product integrity.

A. SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
For optimal adhesion, the substrate must be properly prepared. Concrete surfaces should be mechanically cleaned using abrasive blast cleaning or scarifying equipment to remove any laitance and achieve an open-textured surface. Any loose, friable material or weak concrete must be completely removed, and surface defects should be repaired. Assess the concrete for moisture content, air entrapment, and surface finish. It is essential that the surface is dry before proceeding. Apply TT Prima Bit Primer at the recommended coverage rate to the prepared surface and allow it to dry thoroughly before moving to the next step.

B. TORCHING
Using a gas burner, heat both the substrate and the underside of the membrane's backing film. Once the backing film begins to melt, the membrane is ready for bonding. Roll the membrane forward and press it firmly against the substrate to ensure a strong, consistent bond. A bead of melted bitumen should appear along the full length of the overlaps (sides and ends) during installation. For embossed membrane versions, less torching is required.

C. DETAILING
Carefully cut and seal all detailing areas, including internal and external corners, upstands, vent pipes, drains, and support metalwork. Ensure that all details are sealed properly according to best practices for torch-applied membranes to achieve a fully watertight seal.

D. PROTECTION
For bridge deck applications, ensure the applied membrane is protected. In areas not exposed to foot traffic, the membrane can be coated with Torchtar Aluminium Paint (Product Code: 5200) for added protection. In areas exposed to foot traffic or high wear, a protective layer of concrete screed mortar should be applied over the membrane to provide additional durability and safeguard against mechanical damage.

This application process ensures the proper installation of Bridge Deck Membrane, delivering reliable, long-lasting waterproofing protection for your infrastructure.

Precautions

  • Do not apply during rains or extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid abuses which may lead to puncturing of membrane.
  • Ensure that the product is applied at least 6 inches inside the drain pipe.
  • Apply parapet to parapet to envelope the entire building for long term performance.
